1. What initially inspired you to pursue a career in sculpting and art, and how has your Lebanese heritage influenced your creative journey?
I am now immersing myself in the rich tapestry of experiences that have shaped my worldview. From the majestic Mount Al-Mukmal to the serene Cedar Forest, memories of childhood excursions and moments of quiet contemplation flood my consciousness. These early years serve as the foundation of my being, housing a vast reservoir of subconscious impressions and influences. It is during this formative stage that we absorb the myriad hues of life, from the wonders of nature to the insights gleaned from literature. Perhaps my affinity for nature was not merely learned, but rather an innate gift bestowed by a higher power. As I reflect on my journey, I am reminded of the profound impact that literature and cultural heritage have had on my development. The Gibran Museum, with its evocative frequencies, holds a special place in my heart, serving as a beacon of inspiration and artistic expression. Through meaningful dialogues with friends and mentors, particularly those of Lebanese descent, I have cultivated a deep appreciation for my roots and heritage. Lebanon, with its rich history and legendary figures, instilled in me a sense of pride and reverence for our collective identity. It is a journey of self-discovery, one that intertwines with the broader narrative of humanity’s quest for knowledge and understanding. Like a river flowing through time, it carries within it the wisdom of ages past, shaping the course of our shared destiny.
2. Your sculptures often seem to evoke a sense of emotion and storytelling. Can you share the stories or inspirations behind some of your most notable works?
In the hands of a sculptor, clay becomes more than mere substance—it transforms into a cherished medium, imbued with memories of childhood innocence. Its tactile nature evokes a profound sense of connection to the creative process, guiding the artist towards the pinnacle of artistic expression. This primal material, beloved and revered, holds within its essence the potential to transcend earthly constraints and reach the sublime heights of artistic mastery.
3. As a sculptor, you work with various materials. Could you discuss your preferred mediums and how they contribute to the message or feeling you aim to convey in your art?
As an artist, my connection to the materials I use is deeply personal and profound. When it comes to sculpting, clay is my primary medium—a versatile substance that holds a special place in my heart. In the act of shaping it, I feel a sense of childlike wonder, as if I’m playing with the very essence of my childhood memories. Clay, with its softness and malleability, offers a unique canvas for creative expression, allowing me to explore ideas and concepts with freedom and spontaneity But my journey in sculpture extends beyond clay; it encompasses a diverse array of materials, each with its own inherent qualities and possibilities. Whether I’m working with stone, bronze, or wood, each material presents its own set of challenges and opportunities. From the delicate intricacies of wood to the enduring strength of bronze, I am constantly inspired by the unique characteristics of each medium. In my artistic process, the choice of material is crucial—it is the means through which my ideas are brought to life. Whether I’m sculpting in marble or carving in stone, I strive to achieve a level of precision and detail that speaks to the essence of my vision. Ultimately, my work is a testament to the transformative power of art—to the ability of materials to transcend their physical form and evoke emotion, meaning, and beauty. Through sculpture, I seek to capture the essence of life itself, inviting viewers to contemplate the world around them in new and profound ways.
4. Lebanon has a rich cultural tapestry. How does the cultural landscape of your homeland inform your artistic vision, and do you see yourself as a representative of Lebanese art on the global stage?
Undoubtedly, Lebanese artistic heritage holds profound historical significance, deeply intertwined with our architectural marvels, legends, and broader cultural narrative. The notion you raised regarding the disparity between the treasures harbored within churches and the perceived lack of comparable richness in our contemporary art scene reflects a complex interplay of historical, social, and individual influences that have shaped our cultural landscape over time. The global realm of art, whether encountered through scholarly exploration or firsthand immersion, offers a diverse tapestry of cultural legacies spanning continents and centuries. From the storied galleries of Florence to the hallowed halls of Vienna, each locale bears witness to its own artistic treasures and historical narratives, contributing to the rich mosaic of global artistic expression. Regarding Lebanese cultural heritage, while figures like Tar and contemporary artists such as Huguette Caland or Frouk may not have been extensively explored, the enduring influence of Gibran Khalil Gibran remains palpable, notably evident in the Gibran Museum. Gibran’s connection with Professor Héb Kyrillos underscores the profound impact of his legacy on Lebanon’s artistic landscape. Your eloquent articulation captures the deep spiritual and cultural essence of Lebanese art, drawing inspiration from the spiritual resonance and majestic landscapes of Lebanon itself. Your experiences reflect a profound understanding of the intrinsic link between art, faith, and the profound spirituality embedded in both Lebanese art and the natural terrain. As an individual with a background in politics and a penchant for organizing exhibitions abroad, your endeavors open doors to new avenues of artistic exploration, akin to past engagements like Expo Lyon in Paris. Your dedication to delivering art with a meaningful message transcends the temporal constraints of the present, ensuring that the resonance of your work endures across time and space.
5. Collaboration is often a significant aspect of the art world. Have you collaborated with other artists or professionals from different disciplines, and if so, how has this enriched your creative process?
This question holds great significance for me, as the answer is multifaceted and deeply personal. Every endeavor we undertake requires a profound sense of commitment and dedication, a willingness to nurture it with care and passion. Regrettably, in my experience, there have been instances where individuals, despite initially offering guidance and mentorship, eventually veer away from their artistic pursuits. This sudden departure can leave one feeling adrift, as if their potential remains untapped and unfulfilled. Such occurrences, while not unique to Lebanon, underscore the importance of resilience and self-reliance in the pursuit of artistic endeavors. Growing up in Lebanon, I embraced a spirit of experimentation, exploring a myriad of artistic mediums and techniques. Despite the challenges inherent in the local art scene, I remained steadfast in my pursuit of creativity. While some may falter along the way, I firmly believe that adversity fosters growth and resilience. In the face of fleeting mentorships and transient alliances, one learns to navigate the unpredictable currents of the art world with fortitude and determination. Indeed, the transient nature of relationships in the artistic community can be disheartening. However, it is through these experiences that we glean valuable lessons and insights, forging our own paths forward with newfound wisdom and resolve. In Lebanon, as elsewhere, the journey of an artist is marked by both triumphs and tribulations. It is through perseverance and a steadfast commitment to our craft that we ultimately find our way, charting a course that is uniquely our own.
6. Your art seems to explore themes of identity, memory, and human connection. How do you navigate these complex concepts through your work, and what do you hope viewers take away from experiencing your sculptures?
First, I want to express my sincere gratitude for your questions, which delve into the profound and mysterious aspects of inner humanity in art and the essence of being a genuine artist. I deeply appreciate your effort and the thoughtfulness behind your inquiries. My art is intrinsically linked to this memory, having been shaped by exceptional teachers who cherished Lebanon and the love it embodies. Waheib Kiraz, the curator of the Gibran Museum, was Armenian and wrote extensively about Lebanon’s history, philosophy, and art, exploring the connections between art, humanity, and nature from a young age.The identity I possess prevents me from creating insignificant art. My work is imbued with humanity because, ultimately, humans are the pinnacle of existence. When we close our eyes, the entire universe transforms into a moment of our desires, memories, and inner reflections. Opening our eyes reveals the vastness of the world. In those moments of introspection, we encounter worlds of light and darkness, where light explodes darkness, or darkness explodes light, embodying the aggression and beauty of existence. This profound Lebanese memory has taught me that love is essential, and our connection to the land is unwavering. Unlike meticulously painted nature influenced by artists like Cezanne, my work focuses on the essence of humanity. The world lacks meaning without people; it is through our experiences and emotions that we awaken the world. Every piece of art I create is connected to humanity, infused with the spirit of its idea, aiming to evoke a profound response.Art is a conduit for moving emotions and ideas from one person to another. It embodies the divine relationship between sky and earth, a circular and spiral journey that brings forth a new purity and unseen guidance. This divine touch within me connects with humanity, inspiring my creations. My art emerges from the soil, spiraling towards human experience, encapsulating all human conditions and bringing new clarity.
7. Many artists find solace and inspiration in their surroundings. How does your environment, whether it’s Lebanon or elsewhere, influence the themes and aesthetics of your art?
Question seven can be answered in conjunction with the responses to your previous questions. At a young age, we are surrounded by inspiration, as I mentioned earlier. This inspiration is something we grow up with, and without it, we cannot achieve much. Ultimately, the true source of inspiration is God, who bestows upon us the gift of talent. These talents are honed and developed through consistent effort and dedication.
8. The world of art is constantly evolving. How do you stay creatively inspired and continue to push boundaries in your work, while also honoring traditional sculpting techniques?
Your question is quite insightful, as it touches upon the depth and sincerity inherent in every artistic endeavor. True artistry is an endless journey. Even when a piece is completed, the desire to create and evolve persists. You might feel a continuous urge to see progress, to witness the evolution of your work, much like a never-ending dialogue with oneself.I am a product of a classical tradition that is not just about capturing images but about capturing essence and emotion. My approach is not merely replication but a reimagining, driven by the influences of my mentors and the rich cultural heritage of Lebanon. From Waheib Kiraz’s philosophical teachings to the dynamic expressions of Rudy Rahme, my work is deeply rooted in a blend of personal and collective experiences. The continuity of art lies in its ability to evolve while maintaining a connection to its origins. This thread of continuity is not always linear; it is shaped by life’s trials and triumphs, weaving through time and experience. Art, for me, is about embracing both the timeless and the transient, creating works that resonate with the past while looking forward to the future. In contemporary art, the use of various materials, whether traditional or unconventional, adds layers of meaning and texture. My techniques are not just methods; they are an extension of my identity, refined over years of experimentation and practice. The joy of artistic creation is in this continuous renewal, finding fresh inspiration each day.Every new idea is like a celebration, a moment of artistic rebirth. The process of sculpting is a ritual, a marriage of thought and form that culminates in a tangible expression of faith and creativity. This celebration is not just for the artist but for the audience as well, drawing them into the experience and enriching their understanding of art.
9. Your sculptures have been recognized in different countries. Could you share any memorable experiences or encounters with audiences that have left a lasting impact on you and your artistic journey?
When I close my eyes and think of the many sculptures I have seen around the world—in airports, museums, or city centers—I feel a part of me is embedded in each one. Especially with the exhibitions I have participated in across Australia, America, Paris, and Italy, it feels like being part of a dynamic company, constantly interacting, giving, and receiving within an artistic community where everyone contributes. It’s reminiscent of an artistic university, with a diverse array of influences and interactions, where we see ourselves reflected in others and vice versa. This vibrant exchange is like glass, turning us into mirrors that reflect back and forth.I feel a special connection to the countries where my sculptures are displayed, such as Switzerland. These places hold pieces of my soul, evidence that no part of my artistic journey is lost. My works, once released into the world, never truly leave me. They find homes in gardens, with other people, or in different corners of the world, but they remain a part of me, growing alongside others. The experience of seeing people appreciate and engage with my work is always profoundly rewarding. When people look up to my sculptures, it elevates them, and there’s a sweetness in that acknowledgment. My goal is to create pieces that make people lift their heads a little higher, encouraging them to see beyond the mundane.Even in moments of personal pain, I found solace in small things, in creating small sculptures. These moments of introspection and creation allowed me to continue growing and contributing to the vast tapestry of art.
